The origin of this horse is the Cicolano area, a mountainous area that includes the part of the province of Rieti with the municipalities of Pescorocchiano, Borgorose, Fiamignano, Petrella Salto, Concerviano, Varco Sabino and Marcetelli.
Although it is not possible to document its origin historically, it is proved by the testimonies of old breeders who have been dealing with these horses for years. Furthermore, the existence in the territory of subjects with genetic characteristics and typical characteristics that cannot be cataloged, turns in favor of the existence of an indigenous breed typical of the Cicolano territory.

Other interest in conservation
The qualities of frugality and rusticity, of exceptional resistance to work and generosity have been preserved over time and form a precious hereditary heritage. The services required by this horse are disengaged from it with sure performance due to the excellent physiological qualities and soul, being a rustic, docile and gentle breed. Its docile character lends itself easily to handling and for health purposes such as nellippotherapy in rehabilitation centers for the disabled. The subjects of this breed appear temperamentally calm and respond in a reduced way to external stimuli but brilliant in the right way in movements without excessive vivacity.
Before the 80s, years in which it began to cross the mares with stallions of heavy breeds, to create Agricultural subjects from T.P.R., this breed had not suffered from any genetic influence.
This crossbreeding strategy must be controlled because it could lead to the extinction of this typically Cicolana breed over the years.
