The term pollen lice (false animal lice) is used to generally indicate the insects of the order of Mallophages; in particular it refers to the species Menopon gallinae, of the Menoponid family. The order of the Mallophages includes about 2500 species of epizootic parasites of vertebrates (mostly Birds, partly Mammals) and Insects.

Biological cycle

The pollen louse (or white louse) lays eggs on the feathers forming clusters. It is located in the warmer parts of the guest where he cannot catch himself. These parasites are not particularly dangerous but cause, with continuous movement, great itching. They can rise on humans to cause itching and allergic reactions but are easily removed with a wash.

To the Suborder of Ambligeri also belongs the Menacanthus stramineus Nitz. (synonym Eomenacanthus stramineus Nitz .; common name yellow louse of the body of the chicken), about 3 mm long, yellowish, it is found on the skin more than on the feathers, especially on that of the chest and thighs and near the cloaca. The eggs are laid in clusters at the base of the pens. This louse can be dangerous because it often causes serious infestations.
