The amount of seed corn needed to plant an acre will vary by row spacing and seed type. of sweet corn, North Carolina State University explains.

Plant Corn Seed

Plant corn seeds two weeks after the last frost date for your area. Corn is a warm-season vegetable and grows best in air temperatures between 60 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit and a soil temperature between 60 and 65 F. Planting corn in cold, wet soils can prevent seeds from germinating. Amend the soil with aged compost turned 6 inches deep into the soil along with 3 pounds per 100 square feet of soybean meal or cotton-seed meal that is rich in nitrogen. Choose a location with full sun and enough space to plant the corn in blocks rather than one long row. Block planting increases pollination because corn is wind-pollinated. Plant corn seeds about 1 to 11/2 inches deep, and space seeds 2 to 4 inches apart. Thin plants when they reach 4 to 6 inches in height. Water seeds well after planting.
